Make-A-Wish Southern Florida’s record breaking pushup-a-thon event
$138,844 raised | 27 wishes granted
Make-A-Wish Southern Florida is an extraordinary non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children with critical illnesses. They have a sole mission: Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Each wish experience provides a much-needed respite from a child’s medical struggles, and creates memories to comfort them in the tough times ahead.
Started in 1983 by the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club, the foundation has grown from 1 wish granted every 180 days, to a wish granted every 14 hours.
Increase donor reach | Raise more money | Simplify event management
For this annual charity event, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida teamed up with Anatomy Fitness, a local gym in midtown Miami, to host an exciting pushup-a-thon to raise money to grant wishes to local kids.
The challenge was to host a nationwide event that allowed people from all over the United States to donate and sponsor the participants for every push up done during the hour-long fundraiser.
The previous event raised $30,000, and the team had their sights set on exceeding that amount in 2017. The problem was scale – finding and collecting pledges was often a logistical nightmare that limited the potential earning of each pushup-a-thon participant.
As a result, exceeding previous fundraising goals would be extremely ambitious.
Make-A-Wish organizers wanted a more efficient way to launch, manage and promote their event. The aim would be to reduce the overwhelming administrative tasks involved with running a pushup-a-thon, save time and expand the earning potential of each individual participant.
More importantly, they wanted to avoid steep learning curves from overcomplicated and hard-to-use fundraising platforms. The fundraiser would run for 2 months before the event, and demand for wish fulfillment was high!
Excellent support | No platform fees | Free promotional tools
Anatomy Fitness and the Make-A-Wish Southern Florida team decided to try RallyUp’s fundraising platform which would open the event to the public. Anyone could participate or pledge!
By shifting their pushup-a-thon to a centralized online platform that required no training or coding expertise, the team could focus on quickly setting up their event page in a few simple steps.
Built-in promotional functionality like text-to-give and link sharing with RallyUp would extend their reach and make attracting more sponsors from around the country a reality. A hashtag would be used to promote the campaign on social media, along with the keyword ‘muscle’ for text-to-pledge donations.
The sign-up and pledge process would all be done on their branded pushup-a-thon page, which has a one-click collection of pledge funds after the final totals are entered into the system.
Participants were asked to try and raise at least $250 each. With key issues solved, the fundraising goal was optimistically set and the campaign launched.
100+ participants | 20 teams | 438 donations
In 2017, using the Rally Up platform, the event’s success skyrocketed to $95,000 but Make-A-Wish had their sights set even higher in 2018. The #HourPushUpChallenge ran between October 22 and December 15, 2018 - the day of the live event. It was a record-breaking success!
Over 100 sponsored participants and 20 teams completed as many pushups as they could within 1 hour. Collectively they smashed their fundraising goal, raising over $138,844 in pledges and donations. A single participant raised over $30,000! That means more than 27 life-changing wishes were granted for children in the community.
Many local businesses sponsored the event, providing food, drinks and promotional products on the day. Overall, the event cost very little to run and 100% of the net proceeds went to granting wishes to local children with critical illnesses. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida raised nearly $110,000 more from the first pushup-a-thon when using the RallyUp platform.
“We are SO excited to continue breaking fundraising records using RallyUp!” - Stephanie B.
